CIRCULATED SILVER & GOLD COINS IN THE NORTHERN MALAY STATES (1600 UNTIL 1957)

Welcome to Aleph Coin Blog (Circulated Silver & Gold Coins in The Northern Malay States - Kedah, Perlis & Penang - Circa 1600 until 1957). This blog will preview my current collection or new information of coins that will later be added into my on-going project (that I am doing independently, due to my interest in History and Numismatic). I might be adding information of other coin and banknote that I came across. I am looking forward and much appreciated if someone can come to give information, sharing knowledge, sample of coins into making this project a reality. I also receive support from Dr Ibrahim Baker (a medical doctor, who has so much interest in Malay coins) and Dr Mahani Musa (expert in Penang's history, USM lecturer). Should you have information to relay, don't hesitate to contact me at msah83@gmail.com - Together, we work to preserving our history...

Mexico Dollar 8 Reales 1874 Fake Coin

Obv: Sea urchin with text, REPUBLICA MEXICANA.
You can see the details are sharp as if it was very much just been minted.

Rev: 8 R(eales), M(exico City), 1874, B.H. 10D 20G, with another text LIBERTAD.

Silver will not produce this type of colour and oxidation. Only nickel (or cupro-nickel) produce the oxidation color.

This coin is also known as Ringgit Janek, Ringgit Geroda, Ringgit Matahari. Yesterday, from an auction site, I found this coin and interested into getting it for my research purpose. I pay the sum of RM150.00 but only to find this coin is fake.

So, collector who has found this type of coin, please be careful. It may look authentic, and the mint may look very perfect. At one glance, it looks to be genuine, but after looking at it thoroughly, it doesn't take long for me to differentiate it as fake coin. It is not silver, but I assume it is cupro-nickel. The details look very perfect, to which the coin of this year should have wore somewhere - but this coin does not have any trace of wearing.

I have to return it to the seller, I am not saying the seller is selling fake coin, but his/her source maybe selling to him/her this fake coin.

I would say, please be careful to everyone because spending money, a serious big money on something not worth it, is SO SUCH A WASTE.

Malaysia 10 Sen 1971

Obverse

Reverse

Malaysia 10 Sen 1971
Weight: 2.82g
Diameter: 19.4mm
Milled edge.

Yesterday, when I search through my collection, to check them against my list , I am stumped for unable to find this coin. Even, made me late for work...

Probably, I am lucky enough to learn that I had misplaced it during cataloging my collection. My first thought was, I must have used it and spent it somewhere!

Ok, back to the fact of this coin. It is 1971 Malaysia 10 Cent (it is graded UNCIRCULATED to that I have) and what make it expensive - which is RM95 (Standard Catalog of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Coin & Paper Money 17th Edition, Catalog number MSC3) and RM80 (A Complete Educational Reference - Malaysia Banknotes & Coins, 3rd Edition September 2006) - was due to the number of its mintage. Unlike the same denomination of other years which minted of millions of pieces, this particular year has very limited mintage. Only 32,236 of 10 sen coins were minted in 1971. Compared to years from 1967 until 1988, the lowest mintage number was 17,852,262 (1988) and the highest mintage number was 236,638,957 (1981), source BNM.

If you want to add more information, please do so by email to email or by commenting this post.

Please note: This information is for sharing only, and not will be included in my research.

Update 2012/July/14

I have updated and will update (if any new information found) on my new collection site. The coin particular can be read with plenty more details about variety and the theories about why the number of mintage was soooo low, http://www.exonumi.com/?page=publish&id=1.124.CN.82acc

Spanish Silver Dollar - 8 Reales

Spanish Silver Dollar - Bust Coin.

Coin side.

Reverse side.

Obverse side.

The bust image is Charles IV of Spain, and the exergue is 1798, not 1794 as shown. It is one of my most valuable coin to date. Minted in Mexico City.

This coin used to circulate in Peninsular, especially northern state - Pattani, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Penang - and known as "Rial", taken from its real name - "8 Reales". It is the official currency of the world at that time, and accepted by almost every government.

(I have spend money from my salary to pay for this, quite expensive!)
